Tech can help us save the planet and rethink our future. We asked five kiwi innovators what they’re doing.

From space explorations to genetic engineering, personal computing to digital media, there’s no doubt that tech revolutions have very real – sometimes massive – social impacts.

Right now, maybe more than ever before, we’re realising the wide scope of possibilities technology could have on our lives, both at work and outside of work. Our altered way of working is no substitute for in-person encounters, but the lowered petrol costs that have resulted from this compulsory self-isolation has some real upsides for our carbon footprint. Remote working also promotes greater worklife flexibility, as well as online creativity and collaboration. Reasons like these may be why business leaders are rethinking how we can use technology to rethink our relationships and environments.

To celebrate the 50th Earth Day, a global effort to mobilise transformative environmental action, we looked local; asking five kiwi tech innovators two questions. First, what are you doing for the earth? Second, what do you predict for the future of tech?

Watch the above video to see their responses and think about what you see as possible for Earth Day 2020.

Earth Day’s obviously a bit different this year. Instead of mass clean-ups or tree planting sessions, like our fellow business community we’re advocating digital engagement. We recommend registering for Microsoft’s AI for Earth community webinar, focused on the role of AI in tackling climate change. (Don’t worry if there’s a significant time lag – once registered you’ll get the insights sent to you after the session.) You can also download the Earth Challenge app to collect data about, and drive change in, your local environment.
